National Overseas Scholarship: Empowering Students for Global Education

The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, offers the Central Sector Scheme of National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) to support financially disadvantaged students from specific categories. This scholarship is designed to assist students from the Scheduled Castes, Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, Landless Agricultural Labourers, and Traditional Artisans in pursuing higher education abroad, specifically for Master’s degrees or Ph.D. programs.

Scholarship Distribution by Category

The National Overseas Scholarship allocates financial assistance as follows:

Scheduled Castes: 115 scholarships

Denotified, Nomadic, and Semi-Nomadic Tribes: 06 scholarships

Landless Agricultural Labourers and Traditional Artisans: 04 scholarships

Candidates who plan to leave the country for their studies before receiving the final award letter must inform the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment. They need to provide detailed information about their source of funding, including loan documents and proof of financial transactions.

Failing to fulfill this requirement will disqualify them from receiving the scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the National Overseas Scholarship, students must meet the following requirements:

Minimum Qualification: Students should have secured at least 60% marks or an equivalent grade in their qualifying examination.

Age Limit: Applicants must be 35 years old or younger as of April 1st of the selection year.

Income Ceiling: The family income of the applicant should not exceed Rs 8 lakh per annum in the preceding financial year.

Duration of Financial Assistance

The scholarship provides financial assistance for the following durations:

Ph.D. Programs: Up to 4 years

Master’s Degree Programs: Up to 3 years

Required Documents for Application

Applicants must submit the following materials to be considered for the scholarship award:

  • 10th Board Certificate
  • Caste Certificate
  • Photograph
  • Scanned Signature
  • Current Address Proof (and Permanent Address Proof if different)
  • Qualifying Degree/Provisional Certificate
  • Mark Sheet of the Qualifying Examination
  • Valid Admission-related Document from a Foreign University (Application, Registration, or Admission Letter)
  • Income Documents of all Family Members
  • Employer’s NOC Certificate (if employed)
  • A gap certificate is required if there is a break of more than 6 months between the completion of your last degree and your scholarship application.
