Many people taking the IELTS aren’t sure of which one to take, the never-ending IELTS Academic vs. IELTS General confusion. Actually, this depends on what you are planning to do and what is your purpose of giving the IELTS Exam.
If you are planning to pursue an Undergraduate or Postgraduate course in a foreign country where English is the first language, then you will need to do the IELTS Academic. If you are planning to migrate to a foreign country then you will need to do the IELTS General. In some instances, working professionals moving to a foreign country via intracompany transfer may also need to give the IELTS General Exam.
Structure of IELTS Exam
The test assesses your level of English skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking – in less than three hours.

| Listening | The candidate will listen to four recordings of native English speakers and then write their answers to a series of questions. | 30 minutes +10 minutes transfer time |
| Reading | The Reading module has 40 questions, to test a wide range of reading skills. | 60 minutes |
| Academic Writing | Two tasks are provided in each type of test. | 60 minutes |
| Speaking | The speaking module assesses students’ use of spoken English. Every test is recorded along with the time. | 11-14 minutes |
Remember:
∙ The Listening, Reading and Writing modules are completed on the same day, with no breaks.
∙ The speaking component can be completed up to a week before or after the other modules.
∙ The IELTS test takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes.
