About Queen Mary University of London

Located in London, Queen Mary University of London is a public research university, which is not only a constituent institute of The Federal University of London but also a member of Russell Group of British Research Universities. QMUL has its presence in 5 locations in UK, namely, east and Central London in Mile end, Charterhouse Square, White Chapel, Lincoln Inn’s Field and West Smith Field. Not only this, Queen Mary also has its presence in China, Malta, Greece and France. With around 26,000 students, Mile End campus is the largest self contained campus amongst any London based Russell Group Universities. After introduction on some of the most popular courses such as Engineering, Law and medicine in 2010, Queen Mary became one of the few Universities to implement the requirement of an A* grade at A-level. Four years later, in 2014, QMUL began awarding its own degrees rather than the one’s of University of London.

 

Campus and Campus Life

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is contained by the Mile End campus along with the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The Mile End Campus possess many other facilities within its limits such as the main college library, the student union, a gym, halls of residences, to name a few. The Whitechapel Campus comprises of the Whitechapel Medical Library, the Royal London Hospital, the Blizard institute of Cell and Molecular Science, and Bart and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry. Lincoln Inn Field in Holborn has the Center of Commercial Law Studies and LLM teaching for postgraduates. Queen Mary University of London was ranked 9th for the quality of its research in UK. The Queen Mary Student’s Union comprises many clubs and societies such as QMotion, Ground, The Print, QMTV, Student’s Union Hub, the Learning café, to name a few.. A leopard is the Union Mascot called Mary. Apart from the college’s own halls of residence, the students are also eligible to apply to the Connaught Hall for places, which is in the University of London, intercollegiate halls of residence.

Academic Faculties:

Queen Mary University of London has 3 different Academic Faculties which are further divided into independent departments, schools and institutes. The Three Faculties are:

  • Faculty of Humanity and Social Science
  • Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry
  • Faculty of Science and Engineering

QMUL also has an interdisciplinary Life Science Institute.

Alumni

Sir Richard Owen, a British Biologist, Comparative analogist and paleontologist; Sir John Vane, a British Pharmacologist who had also won a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962; Mario Vargas Llosa, a Peruvian Writer, politician and the recipient of Nobel Prize in 2010; these are all respected alumni to have graduated from Queen Mary University of London. Not only the above mentioned names, but there are a lot more notable alumnus who have studied and graduated from QMUL.
